Don’t miss a beat: If your heart could speak

If your heart could speak, it probably wouldn’t sound like a doctor reading a medical chart. It would sound more like a friend who’s been with you through everything. From your very first cry as a baby to the late-night stress before an exam or that moment you burst out into celebration the moment you scored a winning goal or try.

Your heart has been there for it all. And if it could speak, here’s what it might say to you.

I work non-stop for you

Every single day, I beat about 100,000 times. That’s like clapping your hands all day and all night without ever stopping. I pump around 7,500 litres of blood daily. That’s more than enough to fill a Jojo tank.

You don’t even notice me, because I never ask for a break. But trust me, I feel everything you do, the stress when you’re stuck in peak-hour traffic, the late-night fast food runs, or the way your face lights up when you see a loved one.

The small things matter more than you think

The World Health Organization says heart disease is the number one cause of death in the world, taking nearly 18 million lives every year. But here’s the part you should hear clearly: most of it can be prevented.

Think of your heart like a bank account. Every cigarette, every salty packet of chips, every time you skip exercise – that’s a debit. Every glass of water, every home-cooked meal, every 20-minute walk – that’s a deposit. Over time, those small daily “transactions” decide whether you’re in debt or building wealth with your health.

Don’t only listen to me when I scream

The problem is, I don’t always warn you when something is wrong. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, early artery damage — they’re silent. You might feel fine.

It’s a bit like driving with worn-out brake pads. The car still moves, until the day it suddenly doesn’t. That’s why the WHO recommends regular health checks. Blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol checks even if you feel okay. It’s far cheaper, and far kinder, than waiting for an emergency.

Help me with balance, not extremes

I’m not asking you to run Comrades or live on kale smoothies. I just need balance and you can start here with these three easy habits:

  • Move: 30 minutes of activity a day. A walk to the shops. Playing soccer with your kids. Anything to get you moving.

  • Fuel: More fruit, veggies, and whole grains. Less takeaways, deep-fried food, and sugar-loaded drinks.

  • Rest: 7–9 hours of proper sleep. Not scrolling TikTok until 2am and then dragging yourself up at 6.

Don’t Miss a Beat!

We live in a world that celebrates the hustle. Long hours. Back-to-back meetings. The next deal. The next target. The next “big thing.”

But while you’re so busy building an empire, climbing the ladder, or chasing the latest trend… your heart is quietly working in the background. Beat after beat, never missing a moment.

Here’s the catch though. One day, if you don’t stop to listen, your heart might miss a beat. And unlike emails or deadlines, you can’t just “catch up” later.

So, pause. Put your hand on your chest. Feel that steady rhythm. That’s your heart reminding you: life isn’t just about building, earning, and chasing. It’s also about laughing, resting, connecting, and enjoying the moments your heart works so hard to give you.
