Spring is in the air!
Visit your RingPharm Pharmacy for professional and friendly advice on how to treat the challenges of the season.
Spring has sprung, but for many the joys of spring are muted by the start of the allergy season. Pollen from trees, grasses and weeds are released into the air which can mean the onset of allergy symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, wheezing, itching and rashes to appear.
Here is a few ways you can stop allergies from taking the Spring out of your step:
Wash your hair at night
Rinse the pollen out of your hair, especially if you use mouse and gels which can trap pollen.
Keep your nose clean
The gut is potentially a very easy area for pathogens to enter our bodies if it is not healthy, or if there are not enough friendly bacteria (flora) in the gut. The friendly bacteria create a barrier to prevent pathogens (bad bacteria and viruses) from penetrating the body; to find a place to adhere to and grow; preventing damage to the epithelial cells in the intestinal tract.
Chow down on probiotics or friendly bacteria
By introducing live probiotics into the intestinal tract, the primary and secondary flora populations are increased (composed of Bifidobacteria and lactobacilli respectively). The probiotic strains included in ProbiFlora Intensive are documented to prevent and treat: Candida Infections, Lactose intolerance, Food sensitivities, Eczema flare-ups, Skin irritations.
Stress and the hormone cortisol, which plays a role in the body's reaction to stress, also affect allergic illnesses. In times of stress the immune system pumps itself up ready to fight an infection or do battle. Later the body secretes cortisol, which acts as an anti-inflammatory, essentially turning down the immune system so it doesn't overreact. In some people this can lead to an amped-up allergic response. Try to remain calm, soak in the tub or meditate for few minutes to clear your head.
Dust mites thrive in warm and humid environments, which unfortunately for most of us is difficult to avoid. You can however wipe out dust mites from your bedding by washing your pillowcases and sheets weekly in water that is at least 60 degrees.
Pet allergies are set off by proteins in pets saliva, dander (dead skin) and urine and not their hair. So even if there is no such thing as a "hypoallergenic" pets (except iguanas and snakes) some breeds of are said to be better for people with allergies such as some Terriers, Poodles and Schnauzers. If you can't bear the thought of parting with your best friend, just keeping them out of the house and away from your bedrooms can help relieve your symptoms. Give your pooch a weekly bath to wash off all the dander trapped in his coat.
